Tracing the Origins of NFTs: How did NFTs get started?

NFTs, or non-fungible tokens, have recently been making waves in the world of digital art and collectibles. But where did these unique digital assets come from, and how did they become so popular?

The concept of NFTs can be traced back to the early days of blockchain technology. In the 1990s, a group of researchers and cryptographers developed the first decentralized digital currency. This newtype of money was based on a technology called the blockchain, which allowed transactions to be securely recorded and verified on a decentralized network.

In 2014, a new type of blockchain called Ethereum was introduced. Unlike Bitcoin, which was designed as a digital currency, Ethereum was built to support smart contracts, which are programs that can be executed on the blockchain. This new technology opened up the possibility of creating unique digital assets that could be owned and traded by users on the Ethereum network.

The first NFTs were created in 2015 on the Ethereum blockchain. They were called CryptoKitties, and they were essentially digital versions of collectible trading cards. Each CryptoKitty was a unique digital asset, with its own set of characteristics and attributes. Users could buy, sell, and breed these virtual cats on the Ethereum network, and their ownership was recorded on the blockchain.

Since then, the use of NFTs has exploded, with many artists, musicians, and other creators using the technology to create and sell unique digital works. In 2021, the total value of all NFTs sold reached over $2billion, and the trend shows no sign of slowing down.

Today, NFTs are being used for a wide range of applications, from digital art and collectibles to gaming and even real estate. As the technology continues to evolve, we can expect to see even more creative and innovative uses for NFTs in the future.
